There is a gated logging road ca. 50 m east of plot center. The road starts at Pinnacle on the ridge above. The ridgeline above the plot is a young oak forest with a higher elevational feel than anything sampled at Camp Dawson, Preston County. The trees here are less than 15 m tall with ice damaged tops and a dense shrub layer with a large component being Sorbus americana. The ridge reminds me more of a ridge I was on in Giles County, Virginia above the Mountain Lake Resort (This is where Steve Stephenson did his Master's research).;Heavily logged thin patch of forest community. The forest here is fairly young, (3rd or 4th growth). Lots of decaying tree tops left over from the last timber cut. The plot was placed in a spot where the canopy was most intact. The forest probably has a high site index, the trees grow faster and the harvest comes more often.
Representativeness
Small patch of young basswood, sugar maple forest. Similar to rich slopes sampled on Briery Mountain, Preston County. The forest here is more heavily fragmented.
